Elevated Body Temperature Screening

Deploying an EBT device at either one or more of your building entrances will provide a reliable non contact temperature measuring solution. A thermal sensor will scan visitors and employees as they enter.

Different types of EBT Devices

Before choosing an EBT device, consider:

  • Type of deployment and installation method of the detector.
    • EBT systems can be quickly deployed on a tripod. It maybe difficult to keep cables safely away with this temporary method.
    • Wall mounted option may work better. Ensure placement meets appropriate guidelines for face capture.
    • Flexible placement can be obtained with a pedestal type camera. Most of the cabling is neatly concealed.

  • Position and location of detector.
    • We would strongly recommend that external use of EBT's be avoided - despite manufacturers claims.
    • Placement should be away from large windows or entrances. Avoiding other heat sources will reduce false reads.
    • If you opt for a tripod quick deployment - trailing cables, extended tripod legs and knocking against the detector will be a factor.

  • People flow and screening.
    • Carefully consider manufacturers claims regarding screening of multiple people at a time. FDA will permit screening one person at a time.
    • Single person screening is by far the most effective. With a short 2 to 3 second dwell time for each person at the detector.
    • Think about how people enter your location and are routed to the device, to achieve the CDC distancing requirements.
Do you require your EBT system to produce notifications and alarms if a person is detected with an elevated temperature. To log every scan and event?

Will your EBT deployment be configured to only display temperature to the person being scanned? When an elevated temperature is displayed, the individual is expected to observe your policy at their own recognizance.

The Right Solution

Due to current circumstances, the market is flooded with an array of options, formats and different types.

Finding the right one, is further complicated, as some providers of these products refer to them with completely different terminology.
The term EBT (elevated body temperature) Device, is widely used and now accepted.

The biggest concern we face as users of this technology, is erroneous claims about the ability to detect a virus or actual fever during the EBT screening.

An EBT device can be a quickly deployed stand alone solution offering simple detection and temperature display.

Alternatively a solution can extend to software driven applications with a suite of operational features
Some systems do not produce consistent readings and rely on constant user re-calibration and adjustment.

However, established manufacturers are producing reliable solutions that offer excellent accuracy.

EBT devices resemble cameras with a thermal imaging sensor that scan the skin temperature around the face.

Some systems will use medial (or inner) canthus of the eyes to obtain a more precise reading.
